I was talking to one of the VC firms and after the pitch we got into how AI will impact consumer apps. We both agreed that the best ones won’t feel generic anymore. They’ll feel like they’re built just for you. Hyper personalized.
But look around. Most of what passes for personalization today is just lazy guesswork at scale. Brands say they know you but they really don’t.
You see it every day. A friend loses his dog but still gets emails for dog food. You buy something once for your uncle and now every ad thinks you’re retired. Or worse, you buy one fridge and get spammed with offers for more fridges.
This is not personalization. This is noise pretending to care.
True personalization is different. What you do today makes tomorrow simpler. The next thing feels smarter because the last thing was remembered. A product knows when to shut up. Less is more.
Think about Netflix or Spotify. They don’t just throw random stuff at you. They learn what you like and adjust. Starbucks knows your favorite drink and gives you offers that make sense. Those little moments matter.And here’s what’s crazy. The saddest part is that only ten percent of companies even qualify as personalization leaders. As a result we live in a world of spam. 360 billion emails go out every day but conversion and open rates keep sinking. We downloaded 250 billion apps last year and uninstalled half of them within thirty days
And this is about to get worse. Generative AI lets companies pump out more content faster and cheaper than ever. We’re staring at a content explosion and nobody really knows how this will play out.
So as builders and leaders we need to stop pushing stuff people don’t want. We need to build trust through real personalization. When you do it right people share more data willingly. Consent rates jump from 30 percent to 90 percent. Then you build a cycle that keeps getting better.
If you’re that marketer still blasting irrelevant emails stop for a second. Look at your unsubscribe rates. Think about how you feel getting all that junk.
And as consumers we should push back too. You can feel when a brand is wasting your time. Cut them off. Or at least give them a thumbs down when they deserve it. Companies pay attention to that signal more than you think.
So what does this mean for products that actually help us grow?
Trust comes when you feel remembered. Loyalty comes when you feel understood. That’s true for buying things but even more true for building relationships.But here’s what bugs me. None of this is happening for your real relationships. LinkedIn says it is for your network but it feels more like a content feed you scroll through without any real connection. You get endless updates, posts, articles, likes, comments but it is mostly noise.
The feed is designed to keep you scrolling, not to help you build meaningful ties. You see surface-level interactions, people congratulating each other on jobs or anniversaries, but real conversations are rare.
And the notifications flood you with everything. Someone viewed your profile, someone liked your comment, someone you barely know posted a new article. It is distracting and overwhelming. Instead of guiding you to strengthen the relationships that matter, it just pulls you into shallow engagement loops.
At the end of the day, you have hundreds or thousands of connections but no clear way to turn those contacts into trusted relationships. It is like having a phone book full of numbers but no one to actually call.
